Do you want to be a part of murder investigation in the English countryside? Do you want to be immersed in a story in the best tradition of the English crime novels (Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, Dick Francis)? Do you want to start in a story similar to those of Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot or Midsomer Murders? Do you want to join the ranks of brilliant detectives? Can you trace down the killer? Do you want to go on a detective adventure and improve your English as you plot your tactics, negotiate and manage your project? Join us in the 19th century English countryside, search the body, visit the pathologist, interrogate witnesses, plot your theories – but most importantly relax and have fun!

The plot: John Arnheim was a partner in a prosperous bank; his net worth is estimated in millions of pounds. He had a loving wife, great colleagues and friends. He had been tremendously lucky with everything until…he was found dead at the party to celebrate his fiftieth birthday. The party takes place in his secluded country estate in Ramsey on the Isle of Man in the company of his business partners and family members.

Can you solve the murder mystery before the last ferry leave the shore?

Course objectives…

  • team building, develop communication skills and strategies (team work, negotiation, tactics)
  • develop the students’ competence in public speaking and improve their self-confidence in real-life situations
  • practise the following grammatical structures: modal verbs to express assumptions and speculations, indirect speech,

conditional clauses, etc.

  • practise a presentation of one’s own solution
  • build up a vocabulary in relation to crime (vision, planning, execution, consequence)

Content…

  • interactive teaching methods: drama and experiential learning through role playing
  • students will practise communication techniques and debating skills together with other course participants and through

feedback from the instructors.

  • students will interrogate witnesses, collect intelligence and evidence, communicate with team co-workers, construct

theories, propose and defend their theories and critically examine the theories of others.

  • communication strategy: establishing communication, questioning, conflict resolution, formulating effective questions,

improving of listening skills, answer evasions, techniques to increase the impact of one’s arguments, using stories, presentation of one’s own solutions

  • linking ideas: arranging thoughts in order, citing reasons/examples, using pons asinorum, comparison, generalisation,

summary, branching off a subject, etc.

  • delivery and style: personal and impersonal style, pace, volume of voice, expressivity, articulation, length of sentences,

register/style, conjunctive expressions, expressions used to emphasise or downplay a message

  • learning what makes communication effective
  • using key words and phrases for linking thoughts
  • using personal and impersonal style of expression
  • using different techniques to emphasise or downplay a message
  • using language, body language and voice modulation for clear and persuasive communication
  • presentation skills
